Lot 5150
ROMAN. Valentinian II, with Theodosius I and Arcadius, 375-392. Weight of 12 Scripula or 12 Grammata (Orichalcum, 17x17 mm, 13.14 g), a uniface square coin or commercial weight with bifacial edges, 383-392. Half-length facing busts of Valentinian II, Theodosius I and Arcadius, all crowned; below, IB; all details engraved; the faces inlaid in silver. Rev. Blank. Bendall -. CPAI -. MAH -. Pondera -. Very rare. A particularly impressive piece with three unusually large and detailed imperial busts. Nearly extremely fine.

From the collection of lic. iur. Jürg Netzer, Switzerland, ex Leu 7, 24-25 October 2020, 2024.

The three emperors on the obverse this weight are likely Valentinian II, Theodosius I and Gratian, whose joint rule dates to 379-382, or Valentinian II, Theodosius I and Arcadius, which would date the piece to 383-392.
